We all have a destiny, we just have to find it

There is often something that especially young adults struggle with. We get so caught up with a fear of commitment. Perhaps going on a trip to Europe would be fun, but you might be missing something at home because you were away. You might want to serve a mission but might miss several events during those two years you serve. There are endless examples I can give that show what we often struggle with committing to. As a young adult, I am one of many who struggle with it myself. I attended an amazing Devotional from Elder D Todd Christofferson where he spoke of commitments. If you haven't watched, please do. Here is the link for it: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/live-broadcasts?lang=eng In this conference, he quotes from his wife: "You can't have everything, where would you put it?" Marriages, colleges, even just simple choices to go somewhere has become suddenly avoided, that intense fear of committing to something. Elder Christofferson explained that if we avoid choices because of the fear of missing other opportunities, we will suddenly realize that we are missing all of the opportunities. The choices you make will bring you further joy and happiness, but like Sister Christofferson said, "you can't have everything". Yes, every choice we make will put an impact on our future lives, but Elder Christofferson explained that "Unless you make a choice, your life will be erratic". Life doesn't just give you everything exactly like you expected. Get married, find what you love, put your foot into doors and move on with life. Don't wait for the perfect moment or the perfect spouse. You would have to be perfect yourself if you are to find the perfect spouse. And that follows along with the next fear that he mentioned. The fear of the sacrifice entailed. You will need to make sacrifices, but man, if you are making sacrifices for good things, that will lead you to a life filled with joy that you can't even imagine. I was going to sacrifice eighteen months to serve a proselyting mission, but when I was honorarily released, I felt all of those sacrifices were in vain. But they weren't because I was still able to do what I desired. And that was to serve the Lord. Here I am, serving a mission. Even though I'm still living at home, I sacrificed my time and my money for an amazing cause and let me tell you.
It is completely and entirely worth it. So what if those fears cause failures? That's just the growing pains of finding your greater destiny. Elder Christofferson quoted: "All of us experience failures, but with the gifts of faith and diligence, our failures become temporary". We learn from them, we grow from them, That's just how life works wouldn't you agree? If it's taking chances, it's okay, especially if it is something that you know you will love. If it doesn't turn out, it means there is another plan in store for you, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Elder Christofferson gave an example of a mother putting her child to bed. She put him in his crib and closed the door only to hear a thud in the room. She goes back in and sees her son sitting on the floor and she asks him, "why aren't you in bed?" and he replied: "you didn't get me all the way in". With this example he explained "Be sure your commitment to God, you get all the way in". Commit to God and your life choices will fall into the place you desire. Take advantage of opportunities. They got in your path for a very good reason, don't miss out on that opportunity. Often, those opportunities might not work out, but imagine the many things you learned from this moment, of the failures and knowledge that allowed you to find a better alternative. I have many examples of that with my own family. I would like to just share one brief story of the reason why I moved to Hawaii about nine years ago. My parents were planning on owning a Bed and Breakfast in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. Even though the plan was up in the air, the desire to go there was strong and we found whatever possible way to reach Hawaii and have our Bed and Breakfast. Unfortunately, the Bed and Breakfast fell through. But our plans to move to Hawaii did not. Our desire to go to Hawaii brought us to still move there just as the school year ended and we, instead, began a fish business in a small shopping market in Kailua Kona. With the two Tsunami's in Japan, Hawaii had received the worst fishing season in History the same year we had that fish business. It was a bumpy ride, school was hard, the business struggled, everything was expensive. With about a year of some adventures, tender mercies, struggles and stress, we found ourselves back in Utah where we are happily living. What a crazy year to just randomly live in Hawaii only to struggle with all of that right? But the endless lessons and adventures that was found in that single year is remarkable. Live your life, allow God into your life such as my family did as we moved from our little bubble of Utah to nearly a foreign community of Hawaii. My parents earnestly prayed and studied the scriptures for guidance of what was right and those fears of such a choice was definitely there, but we did it, and it was an experience we will never forget. Wherever you are in your life right now, there are always going to be choices that need to be made. That is something that I am still trying to learn myself, but my parents are a wonderful example of living the life with that fear behind them. They stood next to our Heavenly Father and continue to find the path that will bring them everlasting joy. Elder Christofferson closed with this: "Choose righteously so your life will be of joy and not of regret". What a wonderful promise. So live your life, find a path and don't stray off of it. Get all the way into your commitments and don't let your decisions stray away from the eternal promises that God can give you through prayer and understanding. Your destiny is only there if decisions are made, even if some sacrifices need to be done in the process.
